James Barnett, PhD

Dr. Barnett is a clinical child psychologist and an assistant professor in the Department of Psychiatry at Texas Tech University Health Science Center (TTUHSC)’s School of Medicine. He is also the associate training director of the department’s Child and Adolescent Psychology Predoctoral Internship and Postdoctoral Fellowship Programs. Dr. Barnett completed his PhD in Clinical Psychology at Texas Tech University and his predoctoral internship in Pediatric/Integrated Care at Dell Children’s Medical Center. He also completed a postdoctoral fellowship in Child and Adolescent Psychology at TTUHSC.

Dr. Barnett engages in direct patient care, supervises interdisciplinary trainees, and leads clinical teaching opportunities. His clinical specialties include intervention for childhood trauma and disruptive/oppositional behaviors, with clinical certifications in a range of evidence-based treatments (e.g., Trauma Focused-Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Trauma and Grief Component Therapy for Adolescents, Parent-Child Interaction Therapy, Group Triple P: Positive Parenting Program for Children and Adolescents, and Unified Protocol for Children and Adolescents). Dr. Barnett’s research interests include topics related to childhood adversity, transdiagnostic mechanisms impacted by trauma, and application of psychological interventions. His recent publications include a case study adaptation of the MATCH-ADTC protocol for PTSD symptoms following peer victimization and program development considerations for PHP/IOP services for youth needing a higher level of care.
